What to stream in Canada this weekend: ‘The Old Man’ and ‘Emily in Paris’ are back, a Norwegian ‘Succession’

We know it’s tough to sort through the offerings on the 700,000 streaming services churning out content, so we’re bringing you a curated little list of what to watch. This week: The Emmys! Jeff Bridges! More Aaron Hernandez!
Ryan White has profiled many famous faces in his documentaries, from Pamela Anderson to Dr. Ruth; now he’s sharing the heart-tugging story of Cathy Terkanian who, after she discovered the daughter she’d given up for adoption had gone missing decades earlier, set out to learn what happened to her. Stream it on Netflix.
“Succession,” but Norwegian — and with salmon! A brittle blond powerhouse is determined to consume her family-run competitor so she can ascend to the top of the lox industry, but her hostile-takeover target isn’t gonna go easy. Stream it on Netflix.
AJ Pratt parlayed a tailoring gig for a Kansas City mob member into a lucrative career in Vegas, where he made clothes for gangsters, celebs and politicos, plus Pablo Escobar, and made big bucks slinging cocaine. This docuseries delves into how true this tale is and how it all went down. Stream it on Sundance Now.
Mademoiselle Emily is back for more hijinks, but this time she’s taking her enviable wardrobe on the road to Rome, where she’s tasked with the terribly difficult job of luring a hot account owner over to her agency. Stream it on Netflix.
Jeff Bridges is in peak Grumpy Late-Period Jeff Bridges mode as CIA spy Dan Chase, whose long off-grid retirement is rudely interrupted by a home invasion … and Chase having to go on the run after he kills said intruder. This season, he must pal with friend-turned-nemesis-turned-ally Harold Harper (John Lithgow) to help rescue Dan’s daughter (Alia Shawkat). Stream it Friday on Disney Plus.
Disabled Canadians answer the eye-rolling questions they get all the time, opening up their experiences and what it’s actually like to live with a disability. Stream it Friday on CBC Gem.
God, the ’90s were such a halcyon time for fashion! A massive Rolodex of sartorial stars gather to gossip about why the decade was so influential. And yes, it does include a shot of Anna Wintour refusing to remove her sunglasses for the producers. Other interviewees include supes (Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista), icons (Missy Elliott, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow), designers (Miuccia Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier, Donna Karan, Tom Ford) and editors (Edward Enninful, Hamish Bowles). Stream it Friday on Disney Plus.
Lisa Taddeo’s non-fiction bestseller gets the fiction treatment in this series following the sexual experiences of a trio of ladies, from a teen (Gabrielle Creevy) trapped in a relationship with her teacher and a nonmonogamous married woman opening up her marriage (DeWanda Wise) to a wife (Betty Gilpin) who craves attention from a husband who won’t touch her. Shailene Woodley stars as the fictionalized version of Taddeo. Stream it Friday on Crave.
Natasha Rothwell of “Insecure” and “The White Lotus” acclaim finally gets a showcase worthy of her talent (unsurprisingly, she wrote it herself). She stars as Mel, a “broke, fat JFK employee who’s never been in love and forgotten how to dream” whose life starts to turn around once a near-death experience spurs her to start taking more risks. Stream it Friday on Disney Plus.
Which TV shows will triumph at the annual awards? You have a few days to catch up on our favourites, namely “Hacks” (Paul W. Downs scored an acting nod!), and comedy specials “Just for Us” from Alex Edelman and Mike Birbiglia’s “The Old Man and the Pool.” While he’s a bit of a long shot in his category, we’re also rooting, as always, for Walton Goggins to take home a statue for his work on “Fallout.” Stream it Sunday at 8 p.m. at CTV.ca and the CTV app.
A hundred chefs compete to see who will emerge as the very best. The twist? Twenty of them are famed masters, while the other 80 have something to prove. Judges include Anh Sung-jae — South Korea’s only chef with three Michelin stars — and acclaimed restaurateur Paik Jong-won. Stream it Tuesday on Netflix.
Already binged the Netflix true-crime series about the NFL player turned murderer? Now you can gobble up the Ryan Murphy spin on the material, which is of course dark and contains juicy gay overtones. “West Side Story”’s Josh Andrés Rivera stars as the ill-fated athlete. Stream it Wednesday on Disney Plus.
The fan-favourite franchise is back with even more shenanigans, kicking off with the Shakespearean lament, “never in a million years, after everything we’ve been through, did I think you would reach out to our sworn enemy.” Stream it Wednesday on Hayu.
