If you're not familiar with Madonna and her amazing career, here's a nice review I put together from various sources...
MADONNA'S CAREER
Madonna is one of those rare musicians whose music and personal lifestyle are indiscernible. Throughout her career, she was simply doing what she liked and believed in. She still remains one of the most powerful and influential women in the music industry.
She has sold nearly 100 million albums worldwide and her music has earned 6 Grammys. Her acting and on-screen personality has even won her an Oscar.
Over the years, Madonna has been able to captivate both her audiences and the media with her music, her videos, her lifestyle and her overt sexuality.
Madonna is one of those artists who blazes her own path thru life and has seemed to retain control over her career. She has always been both current and controversial.
Her sassy approach to dance music and her in-your-face videos for MTV gave feminism a much-needed makeover throughout the Eighties, smashing sexual boundaries, redefining the nature of eroticism, and challenging social and religious mores.
One of Madonna's greatest achievements is how she manipulated the media and the public with her music, her style and her sexuality.
~~~
Madonna was born and raised in Michigan. She moved from Michigan to New York City in 1977, following her dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. She studied with choreographer Alvin Ailey and did some modelling and risqué photography, which would pop up later in her career.
In 1979, she became part of the Patrick Hernandez Revue, a disco outfit who had the hit "Born to Be Alive." She traveled to Paris with that group and met Dan Gilroy, who would become her boyfriend. Upon returning to New York, the pair formed the Breakfast Club, a pop/dance group. Madonna originally played drums for the band, but she soon became the lead singer. She was a nutural leader.
In 1980, she formed another dance group, Emmy, and began working on some dance/disco-oriented demos. Those demos eventually found their way to Sire Records, who signed the singer during 1982.
Madonna's first single, "Everybody," became a club hit at the end of 1982; her second single, 1983's "Physical Attraction," was another club hit. In June of 1983, she had her third club hit with the upbeat catchy "Holiday," written by Jellybean Benitez.
Madonna's self-titled debut album was released in September of 1983, and the Hits followed: "Holiday", "Borderline", "Lucky Star" and many more. She had an amazing string of 17 consecutive Top Ten hits.
During all this, Madonna began working on the feature film, Susan Seidelman's "Desperately Seeking Susan".
Madonna's second album, the Niles Rodgers-produced "Like a Virgin", was released at the end of 1984 and was in the charts for weeks.
During 1985, Madonna became an international celebrity, selling millions of records on the strength of her stylish, sexy videos and forceful personality. She released "Crazy for You" and "Into the Groove" became big hits. Then Madonna went out on Tour, supported by the Beastie Boys.
"Desperately Seeking Susan" was released in July, becoming a box office hit.
Madonna's popularity caused the Tabloids to dig into her past looking for embarrassing skeletons. In the summer of 1985 -- both Playboy and Penthouse published nude photos of Madonna that she posed for in 1977.
Nevertheless, her popularity soared and her sexy style was adopted by young female fans who were called "Madonna Wannabes."
She married actor Sean Penn and the rocky marriage ended several years later. In 1986, Madonna began collaborating with Patrick Leonard, who wrote many of her 80s hits.
Her third LP 'True Blue' was released in the summer of 1986 and reached #1, continuing her fame and popularity. "Papa Don't Preach" became her fourth number one hit.
At the start of 1987, she had her fifth number one single with "Open Your Heart," the third #1 from the great 'True Blue' album.
She didn't learn her lesson from 'Shanghai Surprise' and made another film 'Who's That Girl?', another flop. She then tried switching to acting on Broadway and was in David Mamet's 'Speed the Plow' on Broadway, also a bomb.
She went back to music and released the remix album 'You Can Dance.'
Madonna divorced Penn at the beginning of 1989 then released 'Like a Prayer' another #1 album, and possibly the best work of her career.
The songs included "Express Yourself," "Cherish," and "Keep It Together," all Top Ten hits, and "Vogue" became a #1 hit.
In the Spring of 1990, she began her massive Blonde Ambition tour.
She tried Film again, starring in Warren Beatty's 'Dick Tracy' and released a Greatst Hits album, 'The Immaculate Collection' including 2 new songs, both of which also became hits.
A video documentary of the Blonde Ambition tour, 'Truth or Dare' was released to positive reviews. She was becoming more mature and more openly sexual.
In the summer of 1992, the song "This Used to Be My Playground," from the Film 'A League of Their Own' also became a hit.
Then Madonna released her controversial book "Sex" an expensive, steel-bound soft-core pornographic book featuring many erotic photographs of herself, models, and other celebrities. She followed up the book with her 'Erotica' album.
Her next 2 albums 'Bedtime Stories' and 'Human Nature' were her first duds, both mostly collections of smooth R&B grooves with less focus on Dance tunes.
Those albums caused some critics to label her a has-been and no longer pertinent. Fans looked at her in a whole new light.
That caused her to change her image and style, resulting in her title role as Evita Peron in the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Evita'.
Madonna recast herself as an upscale sophisticate, and she released an album entirely of ballads, 'Something to Remember,' focused on a more mature, adult audience. Also settling in to a more mature lifestyle, she announced she was pregnant with her first daughter Lourdes, who was born in 1996.
'Evita' won the Golden Globe for Best Actress and the soundtrack had a few hits, including "Don't Cry for Me Argentina."
In 1997, she returned to making music with 'Ray of Light', which was still in her well-loved Dance style, but updated with electronica and techno. It made her music trendy and popular again and earned her critical acclaim and another Grammy. It brought her into the new Millenium and she started collaborating with many top European DJ's and remixers.
The year 2000 also saw the birth of Madonna's second child, Rocco, who she had with filmmaker, Guy Richie, her second Husband.
She would continue to innovate with her remake of Don Mclean's "American Pie", which debuted at the 2000 Superbowl half-time show.
~~
Madonna rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her other talents. She was a fantastic singer, a great interpreter of the club scene, a decent actress and a terrific mother.
Most people only focused on her records, but she was a fantastic artist in general. Madonna was one of the first female pop stars to have complete control of her music, image and direction throughout her career.
